As a psychologist, I have the privilege of hearing the perspective of residents on a regular basis. For those of you who aren’t so lucky, here’s an insightful video by a resident of an assisted living facility. Dick Weinman, retired professor of broadcast communications at Oregon State University, author and former radio personality, provides a moving account of his experiences as a resident.

Thank you to Rick Weinman. This video is riveting. He was very brave to tell about his own personal journey after a debilitating accident, rehabilitation in a skilled nursing facility, and moving to an ALF. I have lived in nursing homes for 18+ years. I have felt all the same things Mr. Weinman shows us he has felt in this video.
This should be educational material for doctors, nurses, and any other healthcare professionals. It also should be standard in any nurse aide training anywhere in this country and maybe around the world.
He is talking about the limitations of life. I am glad he is found a way around it. I hope he can continue to get out, go about, and give back. I, like him, feel that is the purpose of life.
